Usually not. Mid-year removals are only allowed when a qualifying life event (QLE) triggers them. If you don’t have one, you can remove a dependent during Open Enrollment, and the change takes effect January 1.
Qualifying reasons to remove a dependent mid-year
Divorce or legal separation
Your dependent child turning 26
The death of your spouse or dependent
Your spouse or dependent gaining coverage through another source, like their own employer
Note: If a dependent gains other coverage, you can remove them from your plan, but it doesn’t allow you to change your own coverage.
Reasons that don’t qualify
The plan costs too much, or you found a better option
Wanting to remove someone without a qualifying event
Losing coverage because of unpaid premiums
How to request a removal
Contact Thatch Support from your dashboard (look for the Ask Thatch widget) within 30 days of the event.
Tell us which dependent you’re removing, the reason, and the date of the event.
Send the document that matches your situation:
Divorce or legal separation: divorce decree or legal separation paperwork
Death: death certificate or obituary notice
Dependent gained other coverage: proof of their new coverage showing the start date
Dependent turning 26: no document needed / date of birth on file
If your child is turning 26
Your child will lose eligibility on your plan when they age off, which is usually on their 26th birthday or at the end of that month, depending on the carrier. They can enroll in their own coverage through a qualifying life event. For what they’ll need and how long they have, see 'Is aging off my parent’s plan at 26 a qualifying life event?'.
Not sure whether your situation qualifies? Contact Thatch Support and we’ll help you figure it out.
