Is aging off my parent's plan at 26 a qualifying life event?

Yes. Turning 26 and losing coverage on a parent’s health plan counts as a loss of other medical coverage. That opens a special enrollment window so you can enroll in a plan through Thatch.

What you’ll need to send us

A document from your parent’s plan or their employer that shows all three of these:

  • Your name as the person losing coverage

  • The date your coverage ends

  • The reason: aging off at 26

A letter from the insurance carrier or an employer HR notice both work. Proof of your birthday alone isn’t enough, because we need to see when the plan actually ends your coverage.

When to report it

  • Your coverage usually ends on your 26th birthday or at the end of that month, depending on your parent’s plan. Check your plan’s notice for the exact date.

  • You have 60 days after your coverage ends to enroll in a new plan. Many plans also let you apply up to 60 days before it ends, which helps you avoid a gap in coverage. Reporting early is the safest option.

How to report it

  1. Log in to your Thatch dashboard and select Add qualifying life event.

  2. Choose Loss of medical coverage.

  3. Upload your document.

Good to know

  • Dropping your parent’s plan before you age out on your own doesn’t qualify.

  • If you’re a Thatch member and your own child is turning 26, they’ll lose eligibility on your plan and should look at their own coverage options. See “Can I remove a dependent from my plan in the middle of the year?”
